The pores of the oxide film have to be sealed so that the dye has an improved durability and is prevented from leaching out. We can seal the pores by hydration of the oxide using steam. The aluminium oxide is converted from Al2O3 to Al2O3 H2O. This change is accompanied by a volume increase which swells the cell walls and effectively closes the pores.
